A simple machine that squirts water leads to solid sense of accomplishment for Merrimack 8th grader

More than 120 different whimsical machines, inspired by cartoonist Rube Goldberg, were on display in the school’s auditorium recently that were made from items students found around their house, in their garage, and even in their garbage.

“I made my Rube Goldberg machine because my little brother always attacks me with a water gun.” said Zaide Brown of Merrimack, who built a machine to squirt water. “It was fun to make and I learned a lot.”

The construction of the machines is equal parts trial and error.

When asked how consistent her water squirting machine worked, Brown said about 95 percent of the time. “Sometimes my hammer falls too soon,” she said.

“Our students have fun with this project,” Mack added. “It is a way of helping them transcend traditional ways of looking at problems. They learn a lot of lessons that cannot be taught in a classroom.”
