Fledgling charity aims to help one person time

"It was the first I'd heard of something like this," said Emily Doherty, senior program coordinator for the resource corporation, which has sponsored several of its clients through the Benevolent process.

Another benefit of Benevolent's model is that it cuts through the bureaucratic red tape that is often involved with grant programs, Doherty said. Once a client is accepted by Benevolent, it's a matter of days before his or her video is posted and the process begins, rather than waiting months for paperwork to be filled out and funding sources to be identified, she said.

Donations often come in small increments — averaging about $50 per gift.

"They're not wealthy philanthropists at all. They're everyday donors," Kashner said.

To fund its operations, Benevolent increases the recipient's request that is posted on the website in order to take a 10.75 percent cut. In the future, Kashner said, the fees and partnerships with other groups are expected to fund the organization's ongoing expenses.
