ULM works to prevent another boiler incident

The University of Louisiana at Monroe has been working with the State Fire Marshal's Office to ensure the incident that occurred last week when an uncertified boiler system exploded and sent a maintenance worker to the hospital does not happen again.

ULM issued a statement Tuesday stating that the university is taking the necessary measures to resolve the issue.

The explosion occurred around 10:30 a.m. Thursday when a ULM maintenance worker attempted to light a boiler in a mechanical room adjacent to Stubbs Hall. Residual gas ignited and burned him, according to investigators.

He said the State Fire Marshal's Office is overseeing the installation of a temporary boiler system on ULM's campus this week to replace the one that exploded.

"We will be testing the operation of the temporary boiler system prior to it being placed into service," Thompson said. "At some point in the future, (ULM) will have to replace it with a more permanent solution."

Before that happens, Thompson said ULM will be required to renovate and remediate the structure that housed the boiler system, which is located behind Stubbs Hall.

The mechanical room suffered structural damage from the explosion.

Thompson said the State Fire Marshal's Office has since reviewed and evaluated all of ULM's 13 boilers, and the nine that are in operation were found to have proper certification in place. The other four boilers are not in use.

"We're here to try to help (ULM) through this process to make sure we don't have an unfortunate event like this happen again," Thompson said.
