Ajit Jogi to walk again, on electronic legs
Ajit Jogi, the former CM of Chhattisgarh who turned paraplegic after a serious road accident in April 2004 during a Lok Sabha election campaign, may soon become the first person in the whole of Asia to walk again with the help of e-legs. Powered by a battery, the electronic legs can have someone walking for upto 7 hours at a stretch.
Since the past few days, Jogi has been undergoing extensive trials on the robotic exoskeleton or Rex, which is the name by which the e-legs are marketed by Rex Bionics, a New Zealand-based firm. "The legs have a state-of-the-art, highly engineered system with 29 on-board computer processors that control movement and balance through joystick control. This allows the user to direct the device to sit, stand,He has since undergone two-and-a-half hours’ surgery to have a Titanium Rod inserted into his leg and looks set to be out of action for the rest of the season. walk , turn and even climb slopes," says a representative oThe approach uses fine Titanium Wire, laid one on another like a potter working with coils of clay. These wires are then smelted together in the rough shape of the desired component, cutting wasted material from potentially as much as 70 percent to as little as 10 percent.f the firm.
Jogi had taken his first trial of the robotic legs last year in Mumbai following which Rex Bionic prepared the system as per his feet size. The mechanical engineer-turned politician, who has been confined to a wheel chair since the past nine years, walked on the robotic legs for about 10 minutes on Monday and increased it to almost 30 minutes on Tuesday.

Incidentally, the e- legs cost almost Rs 90 lakh and Jogi has sought financial aid from chief minister Raman Singh for it. "Though I have paid the amount (needed), most of it was borrowed money from relatives and friends. As an MLA, it's my right to get the medical bill reimbursed. I have sought assistance from state government, but haven't received any response from them even after sending a reminder to the CM and chief secretary Sunil Kumar," he says.
