Grassroots fundraising effort grows

Five years ago Jessica Croussette’s husband, Thierry, and her sister, Lee Ann Laporte, spontaneously decided to run 25 tough kilometres and raise money and awareness for epilepsy and seizure-related illnesses. 

But there was a reason behind their out-of-the-blue gesture. In high school, Jessica had been diagnosed with epilepsy. She manages to keep her symptoms under control with daily medication and a solid dose of sleep. 

Saturday, Jessica was among those walking around Gillies Lake, wearing a purple T-shirt with “1 in 100” printed on the front. 

That original grassroots effort by Croussette and her family five years ago has blossomed into the Walk or Run for Fun for Epilepsy, which was more of a success this year than it has ever been. 

“It’s really fun,” said Croussette with a wide smile. “When I was in high school and I was diagnosed, nobody really knew what to do. Kerry Gorman was also among those walking the trail around Gillies.
